Urogynecology, a subspecialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is devoted to the correction of pelvic floor problems. The pelvic floor comprises the muscles, ligaments, and nerves that help support and control the rectum, uterus, vagina, and bladder. The pelvic floor may be injured by childbirth, surgery, or chronic strenuous activity. Injury is frequently accompanied by alterations in bladder, sexual and bowel function. Some problems include: Incontinence, Overactive Bladder, Prolapse, Pelvic Pain, Emptying Disorders Unfortunately, many women never mention this "personal" problem to their doctors. They falsely assume urinary incontinence can't be helped or that it is simply a normal part of growing older. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 13 million Americans suffer from an overactive bladder or incontinence.
